As you’re seeing everywhere, there is a lot of talk about doing what you haven’t had time to do before, doing something new, reinventing yourself, and the list continues on. Well, if you have or are trying now, you may be like me and see that it is not as easy and exciting as it sounds. Your first thought is oooh weee – this is hard, do I really want to do this? I’m here to say YES, we do!! As we’ve all heard before, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it, or, the more popular quote – it wasn’t easy but it was worth it.
Easy is not or should not always be your key factor to decision making. I’ve learned that because it comes easy to you doesn’t mean that it’s for or meant for you to do. Learning new things will oftentimes stretch you beyond your comfort zone. Up skilling is just that…you are upping your skills and that’s going to take work. This post is actually coming from my personal oooh weee in my new learning process and asking myself the same thing. Transparent moment – sometimes you will have to encourage yourself to keep going!! There will be times when no one is around and you will have to motivate yourself, pray and keep going all on your own. It is great for others to believe in you but it is greater when you believe in and motivate yourself. When it gets hard, you have to decide that you can and will continue. You have to remember – I am strong; I am not a quitter and although it’s hard, I can, and will, do this. You have to say to yourself – this is hard but I got this – and will keep it movin’.
Oooh weee and yes, this has gotten hard!! How do I know when I should keep it movin’? The better question is how do I know if this is what I should be doing? In my opinion, you will know by your desire and passion for your “it” when “it” was easy. Example, when I started out learning Structured Query Language (SQL), the initial phases came easy to me. I was able to write simple queries, understand the lessons and new keywords that were being introduced, etc… I absolutely loved it and wanted to keep going and learn more, after all, I am a very fast learner and most new projects have come easy to me. Well, long story short, I met my challenge and it stopped coming easy…not something I’m used to. As I delved deeper into SQL, my oooh weee started. There is SO much more to it than I thought and I struggled as I continued in the ‘not so easy’ parts. Too often, the ‘not so easy’ part is where we quit. Don’t do it. Do not quit. If you like the easy parts, you’ll love the ‘not so easy’ parts when they become easy, and yes, the ‘not so easy’ will become easy as you continue to learn and grow. The satisfaction and excitement of figuring out and mastering the ‘not so easy’ will fuel you to keep it movin’ and ready to handle and conquer what’s next. But, if your passion or desire doesn’t ignite in your investigative stages of your new “it”, maybe you need to keep it movin’ in a different direction. I think the moon and the stars are absolutely beautiful but upon my investigation of the universe, I recognized that I don’t want to be an astronomer. I didn’t understand & didn’t have a desire to understand much of what I read so I kept it movin’…in a different direction. That is ok too – just don’t let a challenge make you quit.
